BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
04 - 25 Sep 2024
Banya Starinna - Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Between Two Worlds is the first interactive installation created under Slushalkata Project and it was presented at the 30th edition of the Week of Contemporary Art in Plovdiv, at Banya Starinna, under the festival theme For a Better World.
The installation creates a direct and personal encounter between the visitor and another human experience, turning listening into an active and emotional act. It uses nine modified telephone receivers as listening devices, each carrying a different recorded first-person story. Suspended from the ceiling on cables that also transmit the sound signal, the receivers invite visitors to move through the space, pick them up, and enter a private listening moment with one personal narrative at a time.
All stories are told in Bulgarian. Some of the participants are not Bulgarian by origin, but speak the language as part of their personal experience of living, belonging, and building a life in Bulgaria.
Through voice, memory, and personal storytelling, Between Two Worlds explores migration, displacement, and the feeling of living between a homeland and a new place called home. The stories reflect on identity, belonging, cultural transition, and the emotional tension of existing between two realities.
